By prioritising more actions, innovation and reduction through decarbonisation and waste management.

We believe that all the planet’s resources are precious.

As a business whose purpose is to bring people together, we are taking measurable and meaningful action to address a challenge that affects us all – climate change. Every day, we’re enacting changes towards reduced emissions in our operations and value chain in pursuit of our 2030 goal: to achieve carbon neutrality in our company operations (Scope 1 and 2). In parallel, we will colloboratively work towards tackling our emissions across the value chain (Scope 3) with our supppliers and customers.

By 2030, we will remove single use plastic packaging from retail merchandise. Where removal is not possible, recycled plastic alternatives will be used. Additionally we are steadfast in our resolve to achieve a 90% recycling and recovery rate across our Resort Theme Parks and owned LEGOLAND Parks by the same year.

Protecting the environment

We recognise that our operations have an effect on the environment, and we're committed to minimising any potential negative impact we have. Managing this effectively is in line with our strategic goals and essential for sustainable success.

Carbon reduction and managing climate change

We're part of the UK Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) energy efficiency scheme, EU Energy Efficiency Directives and other regulations worldwide. Every year we budget for environmentally-focused initiatives; from using low energy lighting to managing water efficiency across our sites.

Our approach to climate issues

Climate issues  Merlin’s approach

Energy use – the risk that using fossil fuel energy contributes to climate change

Investing in onsite renewable assets and support offsite assets by purchasing renewable energy certificates

Energy price – the risk of fluctuation in the global energy price

Waste, Recycling and the use of landfill

Diverting waste from landfill where possible through recycling, and generating energy from waste

Helping reduce plastic pollution

An estimated 26 million tonnes of plastic pollution ends up in the oceans each year. As advocates of marine conservation, we're focusing even more on removing single use plastic from our business and actively seeking out environmentally responsible businesses throughout our supply chain.

In 2018, we phased out plastic straws within all Merlin’s owned attractions worldwide. We'll continue to review the use of plastic within our business, seek innovative partnerships to raise awareness of plastic misuse, and promote recycling through our attractions.

Employee participation

Every year we take part in ‘We Care about our Planet’ events to support our commitment to sustainability. These include collecting plastics and other waste, encouraging staff to cycle, walk and even skateboard to work and driving awareness about environmental initiatives amongst our staff and guests. Around the world, our teams host beach cleans in partnership with the SEA LIFE TRUST, to clear litter and help prevent materials entangling and poisoning animals that live on or near the beach.

Reporting

We’re required to report on our carbon dioxide emissions annually. Our target is to reduce our carbon emission intensity by 2.0% year on year. Full details of our reporting can be found in the Responsible Business section of our Annual Report and Accounts.
